Preparing for a baby? First of all, congratulations! Babies are such a blessing. But let’s be real, they seem to require a lot of stuff, am I right?? Outside of the obvious diapers, wipes, car seat, etc., I’m here to give you MY list of newborn essentials.

1. Swaddle blankets/wraps
We registered for mostly muslin swaddle blankets because that is what I had experience with from younger siblings and my years of babysitting, but I am SO glad that people were still kind enough to gift us these 2 different kind of swaddles because they are so much easier to cinch baby down tight in, which is the whole point of swaddling anyway. Our son also had major tummy troubles for the first couple months of his life, and until we figured out how to prevent that for him, swaddling almost always did the trick calmed him down.
- The SwaddleMe velcro swaddle. Newborns are used to being in tight quarters, aka the womb. Allowing them to have their still spastic arms and legs out while sleeping, results in them waking themselves up accidentally. I am a firm believer in swaddling. This particular one is great because you can velcro them in tight and chances of escaping are pretty slim.
- The swaddle blanket I love most is the Copper Pearl stretchy knit swaddle blanket though. It is much larger and grows better with your baby. River outgrew the newborn sized velcro swaddle pretty quickly. Copper Pearl blankets are sooo soft, and I think I will be gifting one of these to every expecting mama I know from here on out.
2. A swing
We chose this 2 in 1 baby swing & bassinet because this mama loves a good bargain. Plus, our space is limited, so consolidation is key. This is mostly what River slept in during the day and what kept him happy while I did whatever I needed to do. Whenever we had our Christmas tree up, he would sit in front of it for hours in this swing. This swing can adjust to sitting or laying position, plays music, vibrates, and swings (obviously).
3. A small Rocker chair
I ordered this small rocker chair the day we came home with River because I soon learned we needed something small to take from room to room, but we ended up using it way more than I ever expected us to. We have 2 large dogs, so I didn’t feel comfortable leaving him in a room by himself for a few minutes, even if he was safely secured in something. I’m also not a big baby wearer when I’m at home (out and about is a different story). Anyway, this rocker chair is super lightweight and nothing too fancy, but perfect to carry from room to room whenever needed.
Our Boppy pillow was a huge help in those first few weeks of learning how to breastfeed. Contrary to popular belief, learning to breastfeed doesn’t feel natural. Yes, it is a natural and beautiful thing, but it is AWKWARD in the beginning. You’re already so scared that you might break your fragile little newborn in half. Having something to help you both find the position that works best for you is a huge help. Our Boppy also came in handy when letting family members hold him. It helped arms not get tired so quickly, especially for the younger family members like my 12 year old sister.
5. Footed Jammies
River lived in footed jammies for at least the first month of his life. They make diaper changes so much easier to manage than a onesie and pants do. Newborn’s socks will not stay on their feet no matter how hard you try, so footed jammies are great for keeping their little toesies warm as well. He lived in footed jammies at home, and wore a onesie and sweats whenever we went out, which was like 4 times in the first month (3 of which were Dr appointments).
Welp, that’s it!
Those are my 5 newborn essentials that you might not have already thought of, or weren’t sure if you’d actually use or not. I hope it helps you in some way! And again, congrats on your new little one!
